What is the difference between a satellite phone and a satellite PTT?

The most common mistake is to confuse an IC-SAT100 with a satellite phone. You won't be able to call a phone directly with a satellite PTT. However, you can contact any other device in the radio range through gateway solutions available from Icom. The main advantage of PTT is that, like a radio, when you speak, your whole group of users can hear you at the same time. Coordinating teams via a push-to-talk call is therefore much faster than with telephone calls. What obviously does not change is that you need to be outside, in sight of satellites, to communicate.

What are the main functionalities of the PTT satellite?

The Satellite PTT range enables voice and text messaging (SDM)  with or without the RS-SAT100 smartphone application.
The terminals are capable of recording the last six calls received. You can also choose whether or not you want to share your location, each time you press the PTT button.

What is a “Talkgroup”?

The IC-SAT100 has multiple channels, so you can manage up to 15 different Talkgroups! A Talkgroup corresponds to one or more geographical areas in which you assign your various devices.
For example:
-On channel 1 of the device you could communicate with a group divided into several areas: Paris, Tokyo, New-York and Nouakchott.
-On channel 2, you could have other, more local areas, that will cover all of Mauritania. With this example, you would have a link to you entire working area in Mauritania as well as a link to your offices elsewhere in the world.

Who is the PTT satellite for?

The most common users are NGOs and humanitarian organizations, mining companies, the military or anyone operating in the field without reliable land cover. There are also many users in the navy, as well as organizers and participants in car rallies, in desert environments. This type of network can also replace a radio network that would require infrastructure work.
